Trent then picked up the katana and thanked Dennis. He walked at a pace that was slow enough for Dennis to keep up with.
"So, did you have school today?" He asked.

Being that he talked so much, he admired how Trent spoke so easily and freely to him. "Um...yeah, I did. First day of school." He began to smile, ever so slightly. No teeth were showing, but it was an improvement on his shyness, to say the least. Not to mention that this one wasn't fake. He liked being asked questions by Trent for some reason.

Trent then continued to walk, acknowledging the boy's smile and continued to ask questions.
"Was it decent? I never did like the first day myself."

This question struck him hard, as he didn't have any friends at school, himself. He was always way too shy to make them and too sensitive to keep them. He didn't want to decrease Trent's view of him so he made a poorly veiled lie, "Yeah, I guess so."

Trent nodded and then looked to Dennis and held his katana to his chest.
"You know, if you wanted to, I could help you use one of these." Trent said. "If you learned some of the stuff I knew, you could take bullies out with a simple punch."
He then fastened the katana to his back.

In this instance, he was unsure of what he was supposed to do. He was really bored and did want to take up a hobby, but the thought of him hurting himself or someone else with a sword like that was a little rough. He honestly didn't know what to say so he let his heart speak for him, "It isn't a waste of your time, is it?"
He was a little surprised at what came out of his mouth, but he was even more surprised that Trent was able to pick out that he was bullied. How could he tell?

"By the way you act, I can tell that you aren't treated well by some of those jerks at school." He then pointed to a random kid who was about to yell at Dennis, but then decided not to when he saw Trent.
"See, this isn't for hurting people that you don't like. Being able to know some of these things will help you defend yourself if anyone tries to hurt you." Trent then smiled and said, "No worries, Dan. It wouldn't be a waste of time. I asked you after all."

After his question was answered, his choice was apparent. After all, being that he offered it, it was obvious that the service was free. Why wouldn't it be? So, with little hesitation, he responded, "Ok then." The smile that was already on his face grew slightly larger. It wasn't often that he would be this excited, as his life wasn't very eventful to begin with.
"What am I gonna practice with?"

The duo had finally made their way to the park. Trent motioned Dennis to come with him to an unpopulated spot by the woods. Quickly, he ran in and came out with a barkless stick a bit smaller than a katana, though bigger than a wakizashi. He handed it to Dennis.
"That should prove to be sufficient for now."

Although he was a little surprised at being handed a stick, he accepted it anyway, examining it to make sure that there were no knubs pointing out of it that may get in his way. It was clearly lighter than the katana, which he had held earlier. It was so much lighter, in fact, that he could swing it with one arm, testing that a few times in the air before grabbing it with both ands and keeping it still. "Ok...um...how do I hold this?"

"Well, it all depends on how you want to go about it; defensive or offensive."
Trent drew his katana and held it with both hands and pointed it in front of himself, the blade reaching to the height of his head, his strongest foot in front and the other in back.
"This is good for defense. If someone is running at you with a sword of their own."

It didn't take him long to think of which style he wanted to focus in most. After all, he'd been defensive all his life. "I think I want to try offensive." That's right, offensive. He'd already been far too stoic and defensive. He couldn't handle it anymore; he had anger to release.

Trent then nodded. "Okay, then."
He then, both hands still handling the katana, he brough it towards his cheek, the tip of the blade about three feet in front of him. He then slightly bent his knees.
"When like this, you run straight towards your enemy, and when you get to 'im, you bring it down and then you bring it back up as hard as you can. It's somewhat unorthadox, but it works."

Taking the stick that was handed to him, Dennis tried his best to imitate that stance that his new sensei was in. The only big flaw, though a typical one for a new student, was that his legs weren't bent quite enough, not allowing him the desired movement.

While in stance, Trent noticed the troubles Dan was having and understood.
"It's okay if you don't get it the first time, takes some practice."
He then sheathed the katana and unfastned it from his back and then tied it to his waist.
"Another effective but simple position is simply this-"
Trent then grasped the sword's hilt with his left arm, the sword on the right and then bended his back slightly.
"Try that. When your enemy gets close to you, just draw it with all the speed you can muster, making sure that when you draw it, you hit your opponent."
